American Bollywood opens like an old tape, with a blue screen and the word PLAY. Grainy home video drifts through a bright living room. Then a dollhouse appears, standing right at the edge of the sea. Out in the shallows, a person in green rides a swing set that stands in the still water. On the shore, people in bright Indian clothing wait while Sameer Gadhia, in white, stands at the edge of the frame.
Old tape shows a baby asleep, wrapped in soft blankets. A young man in a white shirt stares straight into the camera against a plain blue backdrop. The title arrives in gold over a scrap of family video. There is a backyard pool on a sunny day. A ferris wheel turns against the sky. A girl smiles for the camera in a big hall full of seats. A child looks out of a car window, a date stamped in the corner.
Out on the sand, Sameer Gadhia, in white, stands on top of a low ruin. At home, a child gets a haircut. Sameer Gadhia gazes out at the swing set in the water. A man holds a baby close in old home video. Then the picture warps, people in bright colors stretched and mirrored against the sky. Families walk across the sand, a long freight train in the distance.
Sameer Gadhia watches them pass, holding his ground. Others pass him carrying suitcases. They head off together down a dirt road. Up close, the wind catches his hair as he looks out. A baby fills the frame on old tape. At dusk, a small fire burns by the water. Sameer Gadhia, in white, kneels in the shallow water. At the end, the swing set stands empty in the water. Soft light falls over the still water as the swing moves back and forth.
